Edit Sony Camcorder AVCHD video in Adobe Premiere Pro

I was able to get the video off of the disc but now it is in AVCHD format and i'm not sure how to go about importing this into Premiere Pro (can i?). If not I want to be able to convert this AVCHD file to an avi or mpg which PP2 works with. How do i do this?"
